Dear Parents & Guardians of the Students of Mattituck Jr/Sr High School,
The Board of the PTSA is making an appeal. We know that these are difficult times and there are many pressing issues on everyone’s minds. However; we need to forge forward so that when life is back to normal again we can have everything up and running in order to support our students.
We have good news and bad news. The good news is our PTSA is strong with many contributing volunteers and event coordinators. The bad news is that our President is retiring after 5 years of dedication and our 2 Vice Presidents are aging out at the end of next year. It’s time to get some ‘new blood’ in so that our students can continue to benefit from all that we do. Most of the heavy lifting is done for next year and we are in very good shape in all aspects except for a President. State PTA rules require a local PTA to have a President, Secretary and Treasurer. Without a president there cannot be any MHS PTSA. The rest of the board is in place for next year.
We are looking for someone to hold the position of President. The job of the President will consist primarily of running the meetings and coordination. The first meeting is in October, none in December, then monthly, with the June meeting being a party which Stacy sets up. Events have experienced coordinators so the task will not be as daunting as some may fear. The following will be set in place for next year so that the PTSA is ready to go.
– meeting dates and events on district calendar
– draft agenda for first meeting
– building use for dates we know
– schedule of events for the year
– event coordinators and contact information
– 2020-2021 list of class reps with contact info
– 2021 scholarship application form
– anything else to put 2020-2021 PTSA on automatic!!
For those of you who are not aware as to how much the PTSA benefits your child, here is a list of just SOME of the ways PTSA has supported our students and teachers over the past couple of years:
19 scholarships awarded to seniors last year, Jr High yearly ice skating trip, Fashion Show, 7th grade orientation, JH/HS open house, senior sleepover and senior picnic, pre-prom party, MCTA Turkey Trot, Hoops for Troops, monthly Breakfast of Champions, organizing and running a Board of Education Candidates Night, Faculty Appreciation Luncheon, basketball and volleyball tournaments, Knight Horse Shakespeare, support funding for the 8th grade Washington DC trip, Yoganomics, Annual Artist/Student mentor day, purchased earbuds, Art/ The Memory Project, Olympics of the Visual Arts, One Love Foundation Assembly, Catering for ‘No More Victims” program, Trout in the classroom, LGBT Conference at Stony Brook University, Common Read book purchase, Art/Brooklyn Graffiti workshop and Street Tour, drive-by Senior barbecue (this year), AP Biotech Laboratory program at Stony Brook, Birds of Prey program at Quogue Wild Life Preserve, Field trip to a live dance and cultural performance, LED lights for coral aquaculture, Lunar New Year cultural Connections, Adopt Me pet portraits, Daily Living Homes Skills appliance and equipment purchase, Special Education sensory integration, LI Aquarium exploration and education, Aquaculture in school equipment
If we do not have a President for the 2020/2021 school year, all of these programs will be gone and the monies will be sent back to the state PTA. This is a strict state guideline. There will be no events, no fashion show, no scholarships, no teacher support, no mini-grants, etc. This is the money that has been raised over the past year by parents and community members to support our students.
We do want to thank those who have given their time to all of the events and fundraisers in the past. Going forward it will remain to be seen what school funding looks like. The potential for cuts makes our PTSA contributions even more important to support our school children.
If you can run a meeting, enjoy supporting MHS students and volunteering with a pleasant and dedicated group, please consider saving the future of the PTSA. Would you please consider the position of President or perhaps Co-President with a friend? There are many intangible benefits to being part of PTSA including a lot of enjoyment and satisfaction.
Please contact Stacy Young; Nominating Committee Chair (say985@optonline.net–call/text 631-235-7346) and/or Helen Corso; PTSA President ( hcorso1@gmail.com ; call/ text 631 375-6210 if you have any questions or suggestions).
Sincerely,
The PTSA Nominating Committee
